ENERGY EFFICIENT MOTORSPORT INITIATIVE GROUP WELCOMES MAX MOSLEY STATEMENT
Steve Bunkhall, Project Leader of EEMS, which is Motorsport Development UK's initiative Energy Efficient Motorsport, today welcomed the developments for the future in Formula One announced by FIA's Max Mosley in his Friday press conference at the Silverstone British Grand Prix.

‘It's absolutely the right way to go. Motorsport needs to be seen to be relevant both to the automotive industry and to the public,' said Steve.

‘In particular the idea of using energy storage systems is one to which F1 is ideally suited. We would like to draw attention to the fact that we have been working on the issue of limiting engine power by controlling energy flow, looking principally at Touring Car applications. This is for two reasons: firstly to encourage development of fuel-efficient engines and secondly to enable equivalence between different fuels.

The work that EEMS has been doing in this area has been written up in the latest  (July) issue of the UK based journal
Racecar Engineering.

‘We have recently discussed ideas with Peter Wright of the FIA who was very interested in what we are doing, and we look forward to working alongside all motorsport organisations towards making motorsport part of the solution instead of being seen as part of the problem.'

EEMS promotes the UK motorsport industry creating new opportunities for its renowned engineering resource through the use of alternative fuels and the development of energy-efficient competition for the future. EEMS is also actively involved with championship organisers working on equivalency of different fuels and making energy efficiency central to future competition.

EEMS is supporting three 2006 projects which each demonstrate energy efficient motorsport: the E85-fuelled British Touring Car Astra driven by Fiona Leggate, the Oaktec Honda Insight 1000cc hybrid in the 1000cc Rally Championship, and the Cranfield University Caterham which was the only road-legal car to run in the Shell Eco Marathon and achieved over 100mpg.

Energy Efficient Motorsport (EEMS) is one of five programmes sponsored by Motorsport Development UK to sustain and develop the UK's world-leading motorsport sector. Programme funding comes directly from the DTI and four regional development agencies.
