Volunteers in Motorsport

The contribution of volunteer marshals and officials in motorsport is invaluable: without them events could not take place.  The National Motorsport Training Plan (2004) identified that the number of new volunteers to motorsport was declining and outlined a 5-year plan to:

Develop schemes to assist with the recruitment of new marshals
Provide a training programme, building on existing good practice, linked to a grading scheme
Focus on retention of existing marshals, including incentives, rewards and social activities

Phase One exceeded all expectations by not only halting the decline of marshals but also by increasing the number of new recruits for the first time in race marshalling for over 5 years.

Phase Two has seen the design and development of the Volunteers in Motorsport database which will not only allow better access to marshal information, but also enable significant data analysis of current and future trends in volunteer participation levels.

To date 1250 new marshals have been recruited and 2939 marshals have benefited from the accredited training programme, all though the Volunteers in Motorsport project.
